UltraTech Cement, India’s biggest maker of cement and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC), has won major awards for using eco-friendly mining methods.
The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), part of the Ministry of Mines, gave special star ratings to 13 of UltraTech’s limestone mines for the year 2023–24. These awards were announced at an event in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
One of UltraTech’s mines, the Naokari Limestone Mine in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, made history by getting India’s first-ever 7-star rating for a limestone mine. This means it is doing an excellent job in “green mining” — mining in a way that protects the environment.
The other 12 mines got 5-star ratings, showing that UltraTech has the most 5-star mines in the country for the second year in a row. These ratings cover many types of minerals like limestone, iron ore, bauxite, and more.
The Naokari Mine has always received 5 stars in the past, but this year it got 7 stars because of special efforts like:
- Reusing waste from paper mills to make the mine last longer
- Producing no waste during mining
- Using floating solar panels and systems that reuse heat
- Running programmes like Dharanya Kanya, which trains women to drive big mining machines
UltraTech received the award from G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Coal and Mines. Bhajan Lal Sharma, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, also attended the event.
The government gives star ratings to mines that follow safe, scientific, and eco-friendly mining methods, save energy, and support local communities.
