The Ministry of Steel is preparing a ₹150 billion Green Steel Mission to cut emissions and push the sector towards net-zero. The plan is expected to include a PLI scheme, incentives for using renewable energy, and a mandate for government agencies to procure green steel—steel made with much lower carbon emissions than conventional methods.
A senior official at the India Steel Conclave 2025 said procurement mandates are being considered, though timelines are still undecided. The official also criticised the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which proposes tariffs on high-emission imports such as steel, aluminium, and cement from countries including India, calling it against the spirit of free trade.
