  • TOSYALI SULB Orders DRI Plant to Midrex and SMS for Libya

Libya will soon become a major supplier of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) in the Mediterranean region and beyond. To achieve this, a new DRI plant will be built in Benghazi area. The plant will be using MIDREX Flex® technology and TOSYALI SULB Steel Industries, a company formed by TOSYALI and Libya United Steel Company for Iron & Steel Industry (SULB) will lead the project.

First phase of the project will start soon with the construction of a 2.5 million tonnes per year cold DRI (CDRI) plant. This plant will be using MIDREX technology, same technology used in two other plants of TOSYALI Algerie in Algeria. MIDREX Flex® technology allows the plant to run on natural gas first and switch to hydrogen later reducing carbon emissions and supports green (eco-friendly) steel production.

The new plant will supply CDRI to nearby areas. Once the plant is completed TOSYALI SULB will be one of the world’s major DRI suppliers.

Fuat Tosyal?, Chairman of TOSYALI Holding said, “We are excited to bring our experience in operating DRI plants to help build a steel industry in Libya that will produce high quality low carbon steel. We will use green steel production methods and reduce carbon emissions.

Ahmed Gadalla, Chairman of Libya United Steel Company for Iron and Steel Industry (SULB) said, “This project will increase Libya’s ability to export DRI and make the country a major player in green steel production. It will also support Libya’s economic growth and industrial development.

Midrex Technologies, Inc. and Paul Wurth, part of SMS group will supply the technology for the new plant. Midrex has already worked with TOSYALI on DRI plants in Algeria.

K.C. Woody, President & CEO of Midrex said, “We are grateful to TOSYALI for their trust in our technology. We are proud to be leader in green iron production and look forward to work with TOSYALI again.”

Thomas Hansmann, Chief Technology Officer of SMS group said, “It is an honor for SMS group to be part of this project. Our long partnership with TOSYALI continues to grow as we work together to advance sustainable practices in the steel industry.
